What did the implementation look like: Were there any particular challenges in integrating the vehicles into the existing operation?

H. Körbs: The integration went smoothly because we were able to draw on our extensive experience with the use of replacement vehicles. We had already developed a prepared and proven model for such situations, so that the basic processes were established. Only a few vehicle-specific features of the Mireo Smart railcars had to be clarified. The professional support provided by Smart Train Lease and its full-service concept made a significant contribution to ensuring that commissioning could take place quickly and efficiently. Of particular note is the fact that there were less than eight weeks between the signing of the contract and the start of operations – a pace that would have been unthinkable with conventional procurement processes.

Was hat Sie am Mietmodell von Smart Train Lease besonders überzeugt? Welche Flexibilität war für die S-Bahn Hannover entscheidend?

H. Körbs: The availability of a reserve vehicle was of central importance for our operations in order to offer our passengers the highest possible reliability. Since it was a temporary rental, the possibility of a full-service leasing offer was crucial for us. This all-round carefree package means that we can concentrate on our core competence – the operation of the S-Bahn – while Smart Train Lease takes care of the complete maintenance and servicing in cooperation with Siemens Mobility Customer Service. This combination of flexibility, speed and comprehensive service was an important factor for us. The model allows us to react quickly and professionally, even in unforeseen situations.

Are there any considerations to expand the cooperation or transfer it to other networks within Transdev?

H. Körbs: First of all, I would like to give the important feedback that the model and the resulting opportunities open up a completely new dimension in our industry. For the Hanover S-Bahn, I can definitely say that we consider Smart Train Lease’s innovative business model to be a very good alternative to conventional procurement procedures and will keep this in mind when making future strategic decisions.
As far as the expansion to the entire Transdev Group is concerned, our COO, Christian Kleinenhammann, would have to give a comprehensive answer. However, there are already concrete developments: With our sister company Trans Regio, another field of application is already planned in the 2026 timetable, which underlines the attractiveness and scalability of the model.
However, it is important to mention that in today’s complex transport contract models, the railway companies are not the only decision-makers. Depending on the contract model, the public transport authorities play a decisive role in these complex contractual situations. However, the flexibility and innovative strength of Smart Train Lease also offers new solutions that can benefit all parties involved.
